How about those Gator/Shark Bites?

September 21st, 2008

For installing solar hot water heaters, it is hard to beat the convenience of those new fangled Gator Bites from Lowes Hardware or the Shark Bites from Home Depot. Yes those plumbing couplers are very expensive, but for the convenience, speed of assembly and pleasing cosmetic appearance ; I know of nothing better.

Gator Bite Connection To install, you simply cut your PEX tubing to a suitable length place the white flanged tube provided with the coupler into the bare end of the PEX and then shove the PEX tube into the coupler. Leak … not a chance. The first connection I ever made was perfect. Need something to mate to the older thin wall PEX in houses built 20 years ago … no problem. Wanna mate PEX to copper pipe … no problem assemble same as PEX to PEX.

We at nuSun do not sell the Gator Bite or Shark Bite, but we do sell the solar hot water heaters that you can use to try out a DIY plumbing job and save some energy to boot.

The T. Boone Pickens Plan

July 12th, 2008

I suspect that most everyone has now heard of T. Boone Pickens and his plan to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Here is the link to his web site.

It will be a shame if new admin fails to act

July 4th, 2008

Does not matter whether John McCain or Barack Obama wins the White House; we need a massive program on the order of the 1930s New Deal, the 1940s Manhattan Project or the 1960s Moon Landing Program to (1.) rebuild America’s infrastructure, (2.) to go all out to conserve petroleum/energy and (3.) do everything we can, as quickly as we can to eliminate the need for mid east oil.

Infrastructure rebuilding and development ought to include roads that make space for new smaller and unusual vehicles, bridge repair, mass transit design and build, and development of broad band internet service, which can help to reduce the need for travel.

There needs to be a federal mandate for teaching conservation in schools at all levels, at the workplace and massive TV and internet campaigns to educate the masses about the necessity for saving energy. It is time for America to get away from it’s wasteful roots. Gasoline should be further taxed to help pay for infrastructure development. Large SUVs and “play trucks” should be heavily taxed and discouraged if not eliminated altogether.

Finally we need to get serious about switching to nuclear power. We need to bury the waste until such a time as it is possible to recycle it or shoot it into space. We need to get serious about full electric and fuel/electric hybrid vehicles and nix the insanity of performance at all costs. We need to end the stupidity of food based ethanol because of its inefficiency and because of its horrendous impact on food prices and food shortages.

Doing these things will certainly snap the economy out of its disastrous slide into oblivion and will do much to help solve the climate change challenge.

I am convinced that the down economy and the mood of the nation is such that it will be relatively easy to get the country behind such an undertaking and the results can be dramatic and can happen relatively quickly.

Will they have the guts to do it or will they blow the opportunity just as Mr. Bush did in 2001? That is the question.

We are doing what we can at nuSun, inc. Go there and see.

A noisy bathroom fan can be a good thing.

July 4th, 2008

A noisy bathroom fan can be a good thing when the bathroom is off a crowded waiting room at the doctor’s office. We have more good info at nuSun, inc. including solar water heaters. Just click on nuSun to see some of them.

I predict oil at $50 per barrel.

May 30th, 2008

I hear it said that there is an oil bubble in the market place and I think the contrarians are correct. The speculators are running the show now just as they did when the mortgage bubble burst. Soon the faltering economy in the USA and it’s subsequent down draft that will be felt in China will reduce the demand for oil temporarily. The weak dollar will eventually rebound as the current rascals in Washington are sent packing in the coming election. That will further cause the price of oil to fall and the process will feed on itself and all will run for the doors at the same time and “viola’, we have a bursting bubble. The timing I don’t know, but I think it will be sooner than 18 months from today.

What does it mean for alternative energy, well it will not be good in the short run, but the smart money will pay no attention to this false run on peak oil and will go right on installing their solar hot water heaters and wind turbines, so that they will be ready when the next run on oil occurs in about 10 years.

nuSun, inc. will go right on selling hot water heaters, power monitors and other alternae energy devices.

Be careful when installing a solar hot water system.

May 29th, 2008

There is more to installing a solar hot water heater than just connecting up the collector to the pump and tank and turning on the hot water sigot. You can easily damage the tubes, your home and even get hurt if you are not careful.

Then there are the horror stories from people who expected more performance from their heaters than they are getting.

nuSun, inc. has the water heater systems, and we have installed enough to see both the advantages and the perils of improper installation.

Watch out for OGUBA

May 29th, 2008

OGUBA is just one of the many laws of the Universe. OGUBA is that situation where you burn your pinky and instinctively sling your hand into the wall behind you, breaking three fingers. OGUBA is that situation where you spill hot Starbucks Coffee onto your lap while driving and in your panic, you look down to survey the damage, and of course you run off the pavement, into the ditch and ultimately find yourself upside down hanging from the seat belt and with more Starbucks all over you. OGUBA was born out of people’s inability to multi task. It is the stuff of slap stick comedy. Norton and Ralph of the Honeymooners used it brilliantly. At nuSun, inc. we are always on the alert for a potential OGUBA event and do our best to stymy it.

A major shift in attitude is coming.

May 17th, 2008

As the current administration is sidelined, there will be a seismic shift in attitudes as regards the environment and especially about global warming. Instead of people looking down their noses at those who would live off the grid or use solar and wind to generate power; they will be joining the rush to buy their own solar and wind generators. A solar hot water panel or small wind generator will become a badge of honor rather than an eye sore.

We at nuSun, inc. expect to be supplying some of those products to people wh

Ah, the great feeling riding the electric Red Horse

April 5th, 2008

Earlier in the week I charged up the 48 volt, 1500W electric scooter and yesterday, it was warm enough to go down town for lunch on the scooter. It was the first ride of the season. The quiet run was almost as much fun as the first time I rode an electric scooter. We here at nuSun are still evaluating the Chinese made scooters. I have not had time lately to trouble shoot the minor problems that we have encountered. Maybe this summer we can get the bugs worked out. I suspect that some of the problems will turn out to be inferior electrical connections. This Red Horse has a peculair problem that is annoying, but managable. Here is a description of the problem. You start by driving down town for lunch and everything works just fine. After you have lunch and go back out and start down the street; you notice that the motor seems to be missing, characterized by low power, i.e. poor acceleration. Since this problem has happened many times, you stop turn off the ‘ignition’ (key switch) and then turn it back on. Now the normal high torque is available and the scooter runs just fine. The next time you stop and turn off the key switch; the problem may or may not occur when you start again. Does anyone have a suggestion about what this could be? If you do; please go to the nuSun, inc. site and contact us.

Don’t be fooled by falling oil prices

March 21st, 2008

The price for a barrel of oil has fallen below US$100. Of course gasoline is still at US$3.24 per gal at the Pure Oil station next door. When the price of petroleum goes up; gasoline follows pretty much in lock step with oil, but when the price of petroleum goes down the price of a gallon of gasoline is not nearly so quick to follow it down. Wonder why?

In any case, the price of oil may fall to US$50 per barrel or less, but we should not let down our guard. Over the long term, oil and all the products it influences will be higher still, as the rest of the world quickly industrializes, notably China and India, both with hugh populations and both eager to make a better life for their citizens, which oil helpos to bring about. So get your solar and wind products in place and get used to using less energy, so that when the day comes that oil is US$200 per barrel and gasoline is US$6.50 per gallon you will be in decent shape to weather the storm. Oh, and be sure to be prepared to defend your alternate energy setup, because the thieves will be out in force trying to steal your solar panels and any unprotected copper, etc.
